EN343 explained

Here, Clad Safety provides an explanation of EN 343 the standard for Foul Weather Protection:

What is EN343?

EN343 is a European safety standard set to specify a minimum level of protection required from your workwear and PPE against foul weather. This standard takes into consideration the entire garment, as well as its fabrication to judge the level of protection it provides the wearer.

The certification is split into two categories the first, X judges precipitation, fog and ground humidity. The second, Y measures the garment's breathability in those conditions. Consequently, these categories are then rated from 1-3, with 3 representing the highest level of protection or breathability.

Therefore, a garment classified as EN343 3:3 means both the waterproofing and breathability are excellent providing the wearer with the highest level of protection from wind and rain.

How is it tested?

The waterproofing (X value) is tested by applying pressurised water to the garment through a Hydrostatic Head. The higher pressure the fabric and seams can withstand, the better the rating. Importantly this is tested both before and after pre-treatments including abrasion, flexing and washing.

The breathability (Y value) is tested in accordance with EN 31092, where a “skin model” is used to replicate human skin and measure the water vapour resistance. This is expressed as a “RET” number and the lower the figure the better breathability, and therefore the higher the score in the EN 343 rating.

Finally, the tensile strength and tear resistance of all components and seams is tested, and must meet minimum standards to ensure the garment will last the expected product life.

How do I find out the rating?

The rating can be found next to the umbrella symbol.

How do I ensure my garments withhold the level of protection?

It is important to maintain the protection within your workwear. By keeping the garment clean, stored well in a dry and ventilated area, and cared for as guidelines state the EN 343 rating can be maintained.

Why is this important to me?

It is important workers are provided with the right protection against foul weather. By consulting the EN 343 classification the most suitable clothing can be identified to ensure the safety and comfort of your work force, encouraging better performance and happy staff.
