How effective is the fire safety design of your buildings?

Southwark Council were recently fined £570,000 having been found guilty of multiple fire safety offences, after three women and three children died in July 2009 in a flat fire caused by an electrical fault with a television.

Southwark Council plead guilty to four offences under the Regulatory Reform (Fire) Safety Order.

London Fire Brigade alleges that ceilings in the building were not constructed in a way that would stop a fire from spreading. Other allegations claim that other parts of the construction of the building failed to adequately provide barriers to smoke and fire.

Incidents such as these remind us that ensuring standards of both passive fire resisting construction are as effective as active measures, and should be key components of any risk assessment in construction.
