Insurer Aviva is advising
companies in the motor vehicle
repair (MVR) sector to ensure they
are managing the risks associated
with exposure to hazardous
substances. This follows a
European-wide campaign in 2010,
initiated by the Senior Labour
Inspectors Committee, to highlight
the dangers of hazardous
substances in business.
Phil Grace, liability risk manager,
Aviva, said:
"The motor
vehicle
repair
industry
needs to be
aware of the long-term risks to
health of working with hazardous
substances such as Benzene from
fuel, engine oil, vehicle paint
spraying, exhaust fumes, and dust
from sanding and drilling.
"If proper risk management
around the garage is not
maintained, health problems
related to breathing in or exposing
the skin to hazardous substances
can build up over time."
