Cedrec has issued information to ensure employees protect their skin at work.
Gloves are the last resort and any workplace which has recognised risks to skin should consider how to eliminate the threat of contact prior to using gloves. If this is impossible, then gloves used must meet European Standard EN374-3. This does not mean the gloves will be adequate for all materials and substances, however. Materials for gloves differ in the same way as the substances to be handled differ, and you must be equipped and prepared for this. Chemical protection gloves (EN388), and thermal gloves (EN407) are available.
Manufacturers often provide a chart with specifications of their gloves. This will include 'breakthrough time', the time taken for certain chemicals to break through the material. Permeation rates are often included, too. The HSE advises to choose a low rate of permeation as good practice. Finally, choose gloves with an excellent, or at least good, degradation rating. This will mean the gloves will be of use, for longer.
Gloves should fit the wearer. Too large, too small, these cause risks of tearing, leaking and discomfort. Use sizing charts and ensure a range is available for workers. The HSE advise cotton gloves to be worn beneath protective gloves. They are washable, therefore reusable, and increase comfort, something to consider for workers who may have to wear such gloves for hours at a time.
