Adopting a new system for treating small spillages of highly aggressive water treatment chemicals is helping Severn Trent Water (STW) clean up incidents quickly and cost-effectively, while ensuring the safety of its staff and the environment.
Operators from treatment works in the south of STW’s area have been trained to use the system, which was devised by Paul Stevens, senior technician for Water Production in Warwickshire, working with Miles Hillmann from spill treatment specialists Fosse Liquitrol.
It ensures spillages are neutralised quickly because the correct neutralising chemical is always on hand and the operation’s progress can be confirmed via a simple colour change system, backed up by litmus tests. This reduces environmental risks, with the residues produced being handled swiftly and safely by STW staff, avoiding the cost and down-time of using specialist contractors.
