THE GLOBAL campaign to gain control of plastic waste is one of the fastest-growing environmental causes ever mounted. Yet it still hasn’t made a dent in the growing tonnage of discarded plastic that ends up in the seas.
In the next 10 years, the waste that slides into waterways, and ultimately oceans, will reach possibly as much as 58 million tons a year. Companies continue to reduce the amount of ‘single-use plastic’ we use, including cotton buds, straws and bottles. But one single-use plastic that many industries’ attitude hasn’t shifted for is a gross over-reliance on plastic overshoes.
V12 has carried out extensive research on overshoes usage, working with one of the largest utility companies in the country with 5,000 engineers. These engineers are getting through as many as 10 pairs of plastic overshoes every single day. Over a year, this equates to the weight of your holiday suitcase, crammed full of wasted single-use plastic. Just from one engineer.
To put it simply, a company of this size could be sending at least 70 tonnes to UK landfill every year (that’s approximately 13 million overshoes!).
Determined to find a solution, V12 developed MukGuard – the bag for life of overshoes. MukGuard is a reusable overshoe, proven to be greener, safer and more effective than plastic overshoes. Designed for professionals regularly entering customers' homes, it’s the first sustainable overshoe of its kind.
Ben Turner, director at V12 Footwear commented, "We created the MukGuard in response to a huge gap in the market for a reusable overshoe. We believe in reducing what is thrown away wherever possible and created our hard-wearing overshoe that can be washed and reused time and time again."
Since launching, the company has sold over 50,000 pairs of MukGuard; based on what it estimates an engineer to use every day, this could equate to 13 million less pairs of single-use plastic overshoes ended up in landfill, the sea or anywhere else!
As well as being green, V12 says MukGuard is a lot safer too. It fits snugly to the shoe to prevent trips; and is proven in lab tests to offer 75% more grip than its counterpart; reducing common accidents in the workplace.
